Didier Lockwood, a hugely influential musician in France, sadly died on Sunday February 18. Along with Stephane Grappelli in the 1930’s and 1940’s and Jean-Luc Ponty in the 1960’s, he took the violin into a rock-influenced fusion where free improvisation became his hallmark. I discovered his music at the same time as Pat Metheny and Michel Petrucciani. It is a huge loss for French music which badly needed his innovative approach to teaching, learning and appreciating music in all of its forms.
