Every once in awhile, someone will ask me what my favorite Pat Metheny record is? I always find it very difficult as I
have over fifty of his CDs plus more where his is a sideman or co-leader. I think I came up with a solution, look at his
records in ten year increments. I started with Bright Size Life (1976-1985), next (1986-1995), (1996-2005), (2006-
2015)and finally (2016-2025). Some interesting facts showed up when I broke it down this way. From 2006-2015 Pat
released fourteen records and in both 1976-1985 and 1996-2005 he released eleven records. Also in 1981 and 2008
Pat released three records both years. |

I love all of them but just thinking quick I’d say it’s tie between the mid-western beauty of Bright Size Life and the
explosive creativity and joy of Still Life Talking. Between those two I still have many wow, goose bumps moments even
after many decades of listening.

facing west : I have read or hear Pat say that he has a sound in his head of what he wants to sound like and he is only
about 25percent of the way to that sound. I can’t even imagine what that sound would be. Pat seems to be aiming for the
horizon and the horizon keeps moving. Only Pat could make it somehow. Space travel?

So far using this system I selected Travels for 1976-1985, The Road To You for 1986-1995 (both live recordings, with
songs from previous records plus Pat is always great live), and From This Place for 2016-2025. For 1996-2005 I have
three records to play again before making my decision. For 2006-2015 Kin and Day Trip are competing for the
Metheny Cup. I should have the results within the week. Pat could release several records by 2025 to change my
choice for that period. It still was difficult trying to narrow my choices to two or three per period. From This Place
may be my favorite all-time record. Beat 70 is my favorite song on The Road To You and Are You Going With Me may
be my favorite all-time song. Pat seemed to play both these tunes live for many years, both classic Metheny.

You know, it’s pretty hard to pick a top 10 never mind a favorite. When I step back and look at the discography, it’s
clear that Pat has been great decade after decade after decade. Also, I can’t think of many (any?) others that have
composed so much great material. One thing that I find hard to get my head around: Pat sometimes says that ’it’s all
one song.’ But the distance between, say, New Chautauqua and Zero Tolerance for Silence seems vast. Speaking to
Spin Magazine, Pat once said, "I have had a radio station from outer space blasting in my head since I was five or so."
Now that makes sense--this is music from a better galaxy.

well, of course, this is like picking your favorite child, but if push became shove i would have to select AFWSFWF.
