Subject: Original Rays on Mike Brecker's first album

Question:

Hey Pat:

I can't thank you enough for the countless hours of great listening through the years.

One of my very favorite solos is the one you played on the tune "Syzygy" on Michael Brecker's first solo album. On the same album, there is a tune called "Original Rays" in which it sounds like you quote "Help" by the Beatles.

It's been bugging me for years and I must ask you if that "quote" was done on purpose? Thanks...

Pat’s Answer:

hi paul,

thanks for listening - i don't really remember that, but it certainly is possible since all those beatles tunes are so deeply embedded in my brain from listening to them so much as a kid. but i seem to get comments from people all the time that they hear various quotes in my solos and tunes that kind of elude me even when i really listen for them. it has gotten me thinking that melody and the way it registers on people is a varied as the way that some people percieve color in art - it sometimes seems to me to be as much in the ear of the listener as in the actual tones. next time i happen to hear that record i'll listen for it though - maybe you're right!

best from pat
