Recently ’rediscovered’ this one.. though never really went away. But gained a new appreciation of every tune on it. Another Life, Gathering Sky, On Her Way, Afternoon... absolutely superb. And the sound quality, the recording and mixing is as good as any CD I’ve ever heard. |

yossarian wrote "God only knows what title or music would be a comment on post 2016 affairs...". My thoughts would be that maybe the lack of music is his comment. |

Interesting thread... I always take music on its own, without connecting it to current affairs but come to think of it I think Pat once said the SoN title was a reference to the atmosphere of mutual assistance and cooperation in the days after 9/11 ( the album was recorded in NYC at that time). Am I imagining that The Way Up is a rejection of short- term consumerism and digital instant gratification? God only knows what title or music would be a comment on post 2016 affairs... |

patsfan--A few months ago, I don’t know why I remember this, but I was driving on about a 45 minute excursion and, having my little flash drive in random mode, "Praise" came on out of the blue. I don’t think I had listened to the song in years--many of the other songs on First Circle, but that one was never a favorite, pleasant but... However, from the moment it came on it was like a breath of fresh air, Pat’s acoustic, Pedro, Paul, organ/panpipes, everybody, just the chemistry of that band and sound was like a bright shining light. |

naut-"Tell It All" is ultimate cool. The sounds on it, to me, conjure up a picture of aliens grooving in outer space. It’s got a wonderful otherworldly groove to it! |

Well, patsfan, as I admonished mole several weeks ago, "... it’s better to be left, as long as that’s not left out of dinner." And as I would certainly say nowadays to the question "Are You Going with Me"? "No, Mr. Prezidunce, I surely am NOT!" And I would say to him: "Tell It All... (which happens to be one of my favorite PMG tunes) ... but this time with a little less ignorant, puerile, racist, narcissistic egoism, puhleeze, sir!" |

Mole and Naut ... thanks for the feedback with your usual insightful and interesting takes on the Metheny universe... You immediately detect my rather pessimistic view of recent history ... and how that might correlate with Pat’s choice of album titles. Like ’Side Eye ’. ... that title connotes caution, perhaps some fear .... certainly not optimistic. ( But maybe Pat choose these titles with no relationship to contemporary life, who knows ? ? ) Well, today I was listening to First Circle .... top volume on my car stereo , and tripping out .... and saying to myself .. That’ s it !!!!! .... We need First Circle again !! To start the last 35 years all over again ! Oh., but. ... we could have taken Offramp before then, we would have turned LEFT. .... things might have been significantly better ???? |

Hey patsfan, many years ago, after the Speaking of Now tour show, I asked Pat about the title of that album, whether it had anything to do with his somewhat recent addition to his family of sons (Speaking Of Now), and you know how Pat is with titles and all, he kind of brushed it off. But I’ve always sort of seen that album as a reference to his son(s). Who knows? |

good one, patsfan, for showing the progression (devolution) from ’the way up’ to ’side eye’! . . . love that . . . . . . i remember when ’the way up’ was released and some dullard in downbeat wrote a review of it, pretty much dissing it for being too ’blindly optimistic’ - what a drag . . . . . as always, it takes a ton o’ courage to produce ’hopeful’ art when times are bleak ’n black . . . . that’s what it’s supposed to be all about, ferfooksake! |

Yeh, a quintessentially PMG album .........it could almost replace Imaginary Day, , which got stuck in my car’s CD player a year ago and I love it , but it’s getting too close to me .. I think it was a great uplifting preview to The Way up ... I really felt the hope and optimism for the future.at that time . NOW, it’s all up in the air. Do we really feel that NOW , speaking of now , that it’s the way UP ??? Sorry to be a so negative, but I’m definitely keeping ’ A Side Eye ’. ::) |

Yes! One of my faves - and not just of Pat’s - of all time. I’ve been dying to have a songbook with that album in it - been conspicuously absent, given all the others that have charts. I keep looking. . . I ended up buying (for $55!) a Bob Curnow big band arrangement of the song "You", then had to find my way thru the maze to get to what I wanted - lotsa work! |

Funny you should mention this, yossarian. I`ve been listening a lot to SON the last few months... :-) I guess everything comes in cycles |

Wherever you go ! One of the best compositions ever written.....Pat takes us on an adventure-filled journey. The ending is incredible - those guys just keep ratcheting it higher and higher ! Always exhausted after listening to it ! |

indeed, among the best albums ever!!! |

IMO one of the best Albums ever! Given to the fact that also Multi-Instrumentalist Richard Bona is on bord. What do you think about the Overall Sound Quality in comparison to for example `Imaginary Day`? |
