I thought there was a subject for this already but I couldn’t find it. This seems to one of the tracks that Pat
frequently plays when he performs. So what are your favorite covers of this song? Mine are
from Travels Live, from the Way up tour (with harmonica played by Grégoire Maret) and from the Detroit Jazz
Festival (with flute played by Chris Potter). |

Oh yes, Tiny Tim, El Café Central... Great nights of music there. Tete Montoliú, Jorge Pardo and Carlos Benavent (the best members of the best Paco de Lucía’s group), Chano Domínguez, José Antonio Ramos, Perico Sambeat, Javier Colina, Federico Lechner... Great local musicians. It’s a long time that I don’t go, I might change that but unfortunately the nowadays musicians are not so exciting.

Hello Antoñete, that was a very cool story about Lyle. I met a person (at a PMG in Brighton) who had a game of pool
with Lyle, when PMG was on tour! I knew about him before Pat. I was in band (trumpet, flugelhorn) and one of my
fellow band buddies (flute, piccolo, synths, piano, tenor sax) always was way ahead of the curveball for great music
finds - incredible when I think about it in a time when there was no internet. He had the seminal 1975 album from
North Texas State University (as it was known then) One O’Clock Lab Band, Leon Breeden-Director. Lyle was a
member of that band and he wrote / arranged almost all the charts on that Grammy nominated album. Lyle’s name
stuck in my head, I listened so many times to that vinyl. Lyle holds a very special place in my heart. Lisbon too (so
many great nights at the Hot Clube).... Madrid too (Cafe Centrale)....In music...Tiny_Tim

Hello Tiny Tim, what a Great Story I’m so jealous, too bad I dind’t know you then je, je. I have my own story about those shows, not as good yours, but anyway... After seeing them in Lisbon I spent a few days with my then girlfriend and now wife, travelling around Lisbon and then went back to see the show in Madrid wich took place at begining of July. The show in Madrid was in the courtyard of an 18th century garrison built to host the Royal Guards and his cavalry, el Cuartel del Conde Duque. It is located in a narrow street of the city center. I went there very early to enter at the same moment the gates were open so I could stand front line. When I got to the street, from the basement of a building was coming out at high volume the sound of Secret Story which is probably my favourte record of all time. But if that was not enough to rise my mood high, a few moments later a tall, skinny, long hair guy came out from a bar holding in one hand a glass of beer and in the other one a cigarette. Yes the one and only Lyle Mays crossed the street in front of me and lost himself inside the Cuartel. Great memories I Love Secret Story, Lisbon and Portugal. I love the Pat Metheny Group and I love Lyle Mays.

Formally speaking, a cover would be a version performed by somebody else, at least in
part. So I’ll nominate the song I was just listening to, Anna Marie Jopek’s version. Her
voice is as delicious as usual. The rhythmic backdrop is exotic and intriguing, with an
almost-reggae bassline. Pat’s synth solo terminates prematurely, before the usual
climax, emphasizing that no, she’s not going with him this time.

Didn’t Pat say somewhere that he was most fond of the Travels version of AYGWM? I guess that doesn’t really address the topic directly, but I’d have to agree. The crowd, half out of its mind, really helps take the tune up a few notches. In fact, the audience throughout Travels really adds a lot to the group’s performances.

Hello Antoñete, I was at that Lisbon gig to in the Coliseau.....an amazing night beyond the gig....long story short....
after the gig I led the way with Antonio S., and 2 Classical musicians from Italy, to the Hot Clube when it was still in
the basement (before the Dec 2009 fire gutted it out and closed it). During the pause with a tidy trio playing in the
club, Antonio went to have a convo with them and I went out to the back garden to use the toilet.....as I entered the
garden I turned my head to the right....and who was there at a table reading three composers charts....our man Pat!
A night I hold dear to my life, and in Lisbon and the Hot Clube no less.......

MarcNebo, the Speaking of Now DVD version is the
intro. In the two concerts I saw of that tour (Lisbon
and Madrid), they played that intro and then the
whole band joined to play the song at full power.

My favourite by far is the Offramp versión. I have
nine versions, but to me the other eight are a
different song. Very good song, indeed, but they
don’t have the incredible feel of the original.

I just watched the Speaking Of Now DVD (live from 2002) and saw one of the most unusual versions of Are You Going
With Me?. Last time I watched this video was years ago (before I joined the AG forum. Pat starts out solo on the
Pikasso Guitar and after awhile is joined by Cuong Vu on trumpet. Antonio Sanchez may have done some minimal
drumming, but hard to tell as only Pat and Cuong had lights on them. Very short (but sweet) version of the song. I
don’t remember them doing this when I saw the Speaking Of Now tour in San Diego.
