Roy Haynes, Jazz drummer legend celebrated his 96th birthday yesterday (3/13). I have seen him about six times, most recently about five years ago. I would never would have guessed he was even 80 years old from the energy and undiminished talent he still has. Every time I have seen him he tap dances and is very good at it. Widely considered GOAT Jazz drummer by many other musicians. His signature on one of my drumheads is one of my most cherished. Pat loves playing with him and Roy has included Pat’s songs on his records. I am going to listen to Pat’s Question and Answer CD to celebrate Roy’s 96th.

Bookmark and Share I had two opportunities to talk to Roy, once when he signed a drumhead. There were a lot of people going backstage at the venue, so I just had his son take it back to him. The other time I saw him in the audience at the Jazz Showcase at the Jam Sessions after the Chicago Jazz Festival. It was too loud to talk to him and I didn’t want to disturb him. Next time I’ll try to see and talk to him.

Bookmark and Share Saw Roy play at Jazz at the Bistro in St. Louis. Talked to him at the bar between sets. He sure has played with a lot of Jazz greats.

Bookmark and Share I really enjoyed listening to Question and Answer last night I forgot what a great record it was. Great band and nice mix of standards and Pat’s compositions. Roy and Dave Holland propel the music in all directions. I also watched a video of Roy Haynes and Jack DeJohnette in a tap dancing duel. Very funny and cool video until things go sideways (with video), but then Roy probably could tap dance on a wall.

Bookmark and Share Yes Matc, I have a very vivid memory from maybe 14 yrs ago.. Roy was playing a concert in Davis CA (. don’t remember if it was with Pat) but I was totally impressed by his vibrant personality.. After the concert he complained bitterly that the bars in town were closing down too early, otherwise he liked Davis. I always liked the 2 Pat albums Q and A and Like Minds where you can hear his distinct and spirited playing style .. He exuded youth even in his 80s ! Happy Birthday, Roy !
