Finally Pat has gotten recognized in this year’s Downbeat Critics Poll. First Pat Metheny Side-Eye came in third for Jazz Group, Pat came in fourth for Guitar, James Francies was first in Rising Star Keyboard and fourth Rising Star Piano, Joe Dyson made the list at #12 Rising Star Drums and Side-Eye NYC came in fourth for Jazz Album of the Year. That was the most votes Pat has gotten for Guitar, since 2016 and the highest he has placed in recent years (pre 2016).

Bookmark and Share franksexton : I never watched or paid any attention to the Grammys. Like you said popularity contest even though Pat has collected a lot of them. Downbeat magazine every August has their Critics Poll issue. 114 critics voted in Downbeat 70th Annual International Critics Poll (2022). I counted 50 critics from Downbeat and 12 from JazzTimes. Some are critics for multiple Jazz medias from around the World. I frequently agree with many of their choices and frequently disagree with some choices. I don’t think Kenny G has ever or will make the list. I always follow it and I used it for my signed drumheads and guitar pickguards collection. I have three drumheads with 41 signatures (38 were in the Polls) and four pickguard with all 15 signers Poll winners. They have an established categories and Rising Stars list (I say A List and B List). In December they have their annual Downbeat Readers Poll. Pat always does well every year. Pat usually doesn’t get recognition due to him, so I was very happy this year even though I think he deserved higher rankings.

Bookmark and Share I used to pay attention to Grammy awards but lost interest when it seemed to be based more on popularity than on merit. Who does the Downbeat Crtitics Poll poll ?

Bookmark and Share Am I the only person here that reads Downbeat and/or pays attention to the Critics Poll. I’ve been subscribing since 1976 (approximately) and have been paying attention to the Critics Poll for most of those years. Pleased and surprised to see Pat get long overdue recognition. Pat hasn’t been #1 Guitar since the 2007 Critics Poll. I am sure it will be usual results for Pat in the Downbeat Readers Poll in December. I predict #1 Band, Record and Guitar. It would be nice to see James Francies and Joe Dyson showing up in the Readers Poll.

Bookmark and Share I just realized tonight that both drummers from Side-Eye made the Critics Poll this year. Marcus Gilmore from the record and Joe Dyson from the last (2021) and present tour. I believe that Side-Eye will be #1 Jazz Group in the December Downbeat Readers Poll. Pat will be a the top (#1) for Guitar and both James Francies, Marcus Gilmore and Joe Dyson will get some votes.

Bookmark and Share As Columbo used to say "sir, one more thing". Upon further review I found Pat on the Jazz Artist list (were he should be every year). As far as James Francies and Joe Dyson being in the Critics Poll this year, It’s like what Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr said. During the NBA Finals (before they one and he got his ninth NBA Champions Ring) what he owed his success with five rings as a player and three as a coach, "hanging around with the right people." Hang with Pat and you will be recognized.

Bookmark and Share I just reviewed the complete Downbeat Critics Poll and discovered Pat on two more categories. From This Place was #2 Beyond Album of the Year and Pat was on the Beyond Artist list. My opinion is From This Place is one of Pat’s jazziest records, but Side-Eye NYC wouldn’t have been #4 Jazz Album of the Year. Road To The Sun should have been considered Beyond. As far as Pat as Beyond Artist, beyond categorization maybe.

Bookmark and Share Overall I was very glad to see Pat and Side-Eye get their due props. I am still amazed the last few DCP put Mary Halvorson (#1), Bill Frisell (#2) and this year Julian Lage (#3) and Pat (#4). All three are great guitarists, but I put Pat at #1 especially this time. Bill Frisell has had some very good records lately, but not much variety from song to song. Julian Lage is a great guitarist also, but isn’t in Pat’s league yet. To me Mary Halvorson is hard to listen to, not real accessible. I think Pat since his time starting with his last record with Gary Burton (Passengers) has made such an incredible volume and variety of records that is unequaled by anyone his age. He could already receive a Lifetime Achievement award today. He has quite a resume, especially the last twenty some years.
