Bookmark and Share RIP McCoy Tyner- Two things stand out to me about is distinctive playing: The way he played his chords and the way he would play fast runs in his own unique style where you could hear each individual note so precisely, but with so much soul. Of course there was so much more. He was amazing!

Bookmark and Share I had the opportunity to see Mr Tyner live in 09 and he was, at that time, still a master pianist. He will always be one of the greatest of all time. His solo on My Favorite Things is legendary. RIP

Bookmark and Share Lyle and McCoy gone within a month of each other. Quite a lot to deal with, but with tremendous legacies and wonderful music to enjoy in their absence. In the case of McCoy, since most of us would be too young to have seen the “classic quartet”, it’s too bad there are so few video recording of their performances. I hope some more get unearthed sooner rather than later. Spending the morning listening and watching the giant McCoy with the percussive left hand.

Bookmark and Share Sad news to resurrect this subject with, but Tyner died today, March 6, at the age of 81. A superb pianist I listened to from my early days of jazz consumption to the present day. A great musician. RIP McCoy.

Bookmark and Share Tom, It was really a great show. One of the best in the Festival’s recent years! Of course, Pat and Larry still take top prize for their show in September!

Bookmark and Share He is alive and very well. Saw him on October 16th in San Francisco as part of the SF Jazz Fall Festival. He rocked with: José James vocals Chris Potter tenor saxophone Gerald Cannon bass Joe Farnsworth drums. They played a tribute to Coltrane and it was excellent!

Bookmark and Share McCoy’s in fine form. He played Ronnie Scott’s in London this April and gave an intense driving performance. He appeared on a late night music show that has an incredibly wide range of music (Jools Holland) and caused mayhem as it was live and the trio just carried on playing well past their slot. It was hilarious watching the host try to control things. McCoy is also playing the London Jazz Festival in a few days time. Cheers John

Bookmark and Share Oh yeah Intense is the word. Back in the 70’s at Pauls Mall In Boston I have seen McCoy Break a few piano strings which come flying out. Stage hands scurrying to pull then out as so they don’t effect the other strings.

Bookmark and Share Back in the late 70’s, his trio made an appearance at WWU here in the state of Washington. He played so hard and intensely that he broke a key on the Bosendorfer giant grand........it went flying up into the air......I still remember the intensity.....and power.....

Bookmark and Share Tom, I know he just played at the 2011 Deutsches Jazz Festival in Frankfurt on Oct. 28 - I saw a reference to a broadcast of it on German radio. And a quick googling turns up a handful of gigs in Europe over the next few months: http://mccoytyner.com/schedule.html
