Last night I listened to Orchestrion on my Grado headphones.as usual lights out and eyes closed. I was blown
away when I first saw the show and then listened to the record. But last night I had a higher level of appreciation
of this excellent solo project. Pat’s playing was amazing and the Orchestrion sounded like a real band (with some
robot musicians added). Great compositions and "arrangements" by Pat. I also noticed in the CD Digipak that there
was a photo of a guitar on an Orchestrion rack with two other guitars I never noticed before, it looks like a partial
Pikasso Guitar with maybe six strings running widthwise on the guitar. Also, in The Orchestrio Project CD Digipak
there is a photo Pat playing the guitar. In Pat’s notes for both CDs he mentioned Paolo Angeli. A Google search
said he was both a guitarist and guitar builder. The only guitar of his that I found was a Pikasso-looking guitar that
he played like a Cello. Does anyone know anything about this guitar? |

aloc: Thank you for confirming what Pat’s guitar is. I saw many videos and photos of the Angeli Guitar you
mentioned. Pat’s Angeli was a lot simpler and he used it for part of the Orchestrion rack (three guitars) and also
played it off the rack. I think another Luthier built it for Pat (mentioned in liner notes).

As far as I understand, the so-called Angeli guitar (or guitars) is a guitar that is augmented by various mechanics
and open strings. Search for Paolo Angleli’s Tiny Desk Concert on YouTube, for instance, if you haven’t checked it
out already. There you can see (and hear) Angeli’s own version of this guitar (I think that Pat’s version of the
instrument is a bit simpler, but I’m not 100percent on that) and Angeli playing great music on it. After the first tune
Angeli also explains the features of the instrument and how it works. It’s tuned lower than a regular guitar (kind of
like a baritone guitar), it has a propeller inside the guitar for a continuous drone or tremolo-like sound, and it has
hammer-mechanisms that can be controlled with foot pedals (for bass lines etc). Maybe someone can give an even
more in-depth explanation, but that’s the gist of it, so far as I understand. And yes, sometimes Angeli plays the
instrument with a bow, as well. I hope that this helped somewhat!
