I was lucky enough to see Pat’s show in Cranston RI a couple of weeks ago, part of what he’s called “The Back Nine” (9 US dates) after touring globally for Moon Dial. This was the third time seeing his solo gig starting with the short New England solo tour in 2019. He never ceases to amaze , even after seeing him over 40 times since 1976. To see how this gig has morphed over the years was unique. The sound that he gets from the nylon string baritone is just the warmest, completely enveloping tone and is a revelation to hear live. A couple of highlights. For the first time in over 30 years, I found his bit from Zero Tolerance for Silence was approachable and wonderful. Orchestrion and electric set was joyously a wash of musical colors and bliss. But the one that made me catch my breath and the hairs on my neck stand up was the end of the second encore, when he played a medley of America the Beautiful and El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido (The United People Will Never Be Defeated). I found it was a perfect, quiet musical whisper of sonic balm for these turbulent, disturbing times. Could barely breath through it. I was wondering if anybody knew if he played this at any of the other 8 shows? I’ve always said that PM concerts always take you to new places and adventures but always close the show by wrapping you up in a warm blanket of musical colors, tucking you in and sending the audience off onto the night full of wonder and bliss. 49 years since first seeing him, I still find it true.

Bookmark and Share Yeah . . . I saw Pat in Rochester NY. He played America The Beautiful into This Is Not America into Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido. (He had earlier closed his opening medley with This Is Not . . .) Somewhere on youtube there’s a video of him playing Pueblo . . . only - maybe in Chile, not that long ago?

Bookmark and Share seadog: I wish I would have been at one of those shows. I caught the 2023 Dream Box Tour in Chicago. Pat had just started playing a couple tunes from MoonDial on the nylon-string Baritone Guitar. I believe it was my fifty-first Pat show since 1977 or 1976, and I agree with your review. It was way more than what I expected a thorough retrospective of his solo records (and the duo record with Charlie Haden). Did Pat start the show with extensive talking about his career, records and much more? The Grand Finale at the Chicago show left me speechless and was difficult to explain to someone who wasn’t there. It kept growing and growing as he added more guitar loops. It was a true one-man band and musical trip from Bright Size Life to MoonDial. I briefly thought about trying to catch the show again, but it would have tainted the show I saw. One of his best shows, if not his best in my opinion.
