Percussionist Marilyn Mazur passed on December 12, 2025 at age 70. She had a very prolific career as a percussionist, songwriter and bandleader. She played with Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, Charlie Mariano, Andreas Vollenweider, among others. Of special note, is her work on the ECM label, both as a leader or collaborator. Jan Garbarek had her on board for the "12 Moons" "Visible World" and "Rites" albums. There are concert recordings from this period available on Youtube. She was involved with a few projects with Eberhard Weber including the "Stages of A Long Journey" live ensemble recording. Marilyn Mazur also worked with Helge Sunde or two of his albums. Sunde was the orchestra conductor and arranger for the Eberhard Weber Hommage concert which had Pat Metheny’s "Hommage" tune & performance.

Bookmark and Share That’s sad news and at a relatively young age. I just saw that ECM has officially announced her death, said it was after a period of illness. A great drummer and percussionist that played with everybody and did her own thing and was not constrained by any kinds of limitations as to style or type of music. One of my favorite records of hers is Celestial Circle (2011) and I was just listening to it recently. She will be missed.
