I just read a brief, but very informative article in JazzWise magazine about Pat’s new record. This release will be on
the launch of his own record label, Uniquity Music. Pat plans to reissue every record since Song X and all future
recordings on his label. |

Very nice record. A few random comments. What I first took for Pat’s synth in the middle section of the opening track I realize now may very well be keyboard instead. I stand corrected if that’s the case. Pat begins several synth solos in the lower register, for instance on "Don’t Look Down," where I hear subtle echoes of The Way Up, which is kind of cool sonically and thematically, and on "Make a New World," where his synth sounds unlike I’ve ever heard it before. Fishman has a very unique, individual character on keyboards, and Dyson’s drumming is fascinating, sensitive and solid throughout. Love how the blues of "Urban and Western" morph into gospel. The shuffle groove of "SE-O" is sweet. Both of those tracks add new dimensions to Pat’s repertoire.

I’m listening to the new album right now. I trust many of you have picked up your copies. I haven’t been this excited about a Metheny release since From This Place. That was a spectacular one, warm and melodic, and this one I would describe as completely fresh and the closest to a Group album he has done. Pat seems to be energized by this iteration of the Side-Eye group, but also by the addition of a fuller group, including a vocal ensemble that really complements the music personally. There’s clear excitement in these songs, many of them upbeat. Fishman and the vocalists bring an interesting gospel touch into songs like Urban and Western, so that even the gentler numbers are delicious. The arrangements and progressions are more unpredictable and pleasing than ever. As recording artists--McCartney, Paul Simon, Donald Fagen--age, they generally lose that little spark from their twenties that made their work immortal. This doesn’t happen with Metheny, because he stubbornly reinvents himself with the challenge of younger musicians and newer styles around him. They have helped lift him to a new inspirational level with Side-Eye iii+. Every track is a winner.

I am curious about what he will do with all of his records he plans to reissue. Maybe he can get the master tape for
the Live PMG promo record that ECM released in 1977. I have a copy that I plan to get it transferred to a CD. I found
a place that will do it. I also have a VHS tape of a PMG concert in Stuttgart back in 1988.

The first two cuts released from the new Side-Eye lineup are OUTSTANDING. They have the energy and the accessibility of the From This Place album, and the kicker is, he added a bunch of musicians, rather than the trio format--including vocal ensemble under Mark Kibble’s direction. For those who miss the PMG days, this gets very close. Pat said in an interview that he didn’t quite get what he was looking for in the first Side-Eye--great group, but he was looking for something really special and found it this time. I think he’s been wanting to go back to guitar/piano basis as he had with Lyle. "Don’t Look Down" has that quest for euphoric release that his most moving music always has. "In On It" is great too. I think this will be a special album and will herald a new era in his music with the label he has created.
