Just a little gripe, so I hope it’s published as I’m
sure I’m not alone here. Two weeks ago the
London Barbican dates were announced, this
was welcome news, but I don’t live in London
so I looked at the schedule and noticed gaps
on either side, meaning a possibility of further
UK dates. I held off for more than a week,
keeping tabs on availability for the Barbican,
then when it didn’t look like anything else was
going to be added I went ahead and booked a
London trip. I live 180 miles from London so it
means trains, a hotel and expenses. Two days
later Manchester is announced. It’s a 20
minute drive from my house! Tour dates
within each country should be announced at
the same time, they always used to be. Then
you choose where you want to go. PM
commands a very loyal and hardcore fan base
who are going to travel long distances if there
is nothing close to home (pun absolutely
intended) but in the current financial climate,
particularly here in the Uk, it’s become difficult
to afford. Years ago I’d do a whole Uk tour
without even looking at the expense, but
things change, the cost of living etc. I’m well
aware that these decisions are not made by
the artists themselves, but it’s not right. Ticket
prices are through the roof already without
extra issues. Had I known about Manchester, I
wouldn’t be going to London. I’m sure others
are in the same situation? Of course when July
arrives and the money is hopefully forgotten,
I’ll thoroughly enjoy the trip and the gigs but
that’s not really the point is it?! Rant over
thank you. |

On a related note I’d be interested what UK
fans make of the fact that Pat usually plays here
much less than other European countries. On a
typical tour he may play one or two gigs in the
UK (and sometimes none at all!) And then a
whole week of gigs in Poland or Norway.
I always assumed it had something to do with
the fans being less passionate. The first time I
saw Pat live I was living in Buenos Aires and the
passion from the Argentinian fans was
legendary! Then I saw the Speaking of Now tour
at the Albert Hall and over half the audience
streamed out before the encores mumbling
about missing the last tube. Also the Italian fans
on The Road to You are incredible, I would
never expect anything like that from British
fans.
But then, on the Kin tour, I saw him in both
London and in Italy (inspired by The Road to
You). There were 4 encores in London from a
very warm and appreciative audience, and the
Italian fans were far more lacklustre.

karn and chrispilling: I am sure it’s overwhelming trying to schedule Pat’s tours. I know that it the US his
agent has Pat on a route from city to city. I know that in the US most large venues schedule their shows
from October to June the following year. Pat’s agent has to find a concert hall that fits the schedule and
route (continuous in direction). I have talked to and worked with agents and schedulers at venues so I
know something about the business. I am sure that there are a lot more factors that go into scheduling
Pat’s tours since the are usually very extensive. I live in Chicago and I got tickets for the show here and
also go tickets for the Madison Wisconsin show (3-hour drive). There is also a show in Milwaukee
Wisconsin (less than two-hour drive). Pat has a great tour bus so they can get to the next gig in several
hours.

Chris, I wasn’t aware you could sell tickets
back to the Barbican, that’s useful info thanks.
However, I won’t get a refund on my hotel as I
took the cheapest option which is non-
refundable. As you say, the album is incredible
as are the little bits of footage that have
appeared on YouTube, so in a way I’m glad to
be able to absorb the performance twice
because there will be a lot in it, hopefully a
slightly different set list each night. I still think
it’s out of order to stagger the concert
announcements within a country, we are
already being totally ripped off by most
concert ticket prices without further issues to
deal with. I’ve pretty much stopped going to
big gigs now but I’m making an exception for
Pat as he is just a little bit special! One of my
favourite rock groups is Rush, who have just
announced a new tour with a new drummer.
The ticket prices are absolutely ludicrous, it’s
an insult to their legion of life long fans, many
of whom just won’t be able to afford to attend.
They did at least announce all cities at the
same time!

mate I am in same boat and after hearing the full new album part of me is thinking thank god i get to see the show
twice but you’re right about the expense - have you checked out the Barbican site about selling back your ticket
within 4 days of the gig date?
