Monday NEA Jazz Master Sonny Rollins passed away at 95-years-old. I was fortunate to see four of his shows and everyone was extraordinary experience. The first time was back in 1982 and the last was in 2010, the last time he was in Chicago before his retirement. In my opinion he was the best at improvising and totally transforming a song frequently at a fast tempo. The music just flowed from his tenor saxophone as did quotes from other songs tossed in. I saw many jazz legends since I started listening to jazz over fifty years ago. All four of his shows are at the top of my favorite live shows. I will cherish those memories and all my Sonny Rollins records. I am going to watch his live in Vienna DVD tonight. |

I thought there would be another Sonny Rollins fan posting here. I was lucky enough to see him live four times. The
first time was in 1982 and the last in 2010 (his last Chicago show). Calling him "legendary" or "iconic" didn’t fit. All
four of the shows I saw are at the top of my list of best shows ever. Check out the online video Sonny Rollins In
Vienne and you see what I mean. Sonny was seventy-five-years-old.

I just found a great short video online that shows two of many things about Sonny Rollins that made him such a
legendary musician. The first part showcases his incredible improvising skill during an unaccompanied solo. Try to
count how many songs he quoted in the solo. The last part needs little introduction except nothing can stop him
from finishing a song. Search for "Sonny Rollins plays on despite breaking his heel." The band’s reaction is hilarious.
