Question:

ON ALMOST ALL OF YOUR ALBUMS YOU HAVE AT LEAST ONE HIGH CLIMATIC SONG LIKE "THE AWAKENING" WHICH I ALWAYS GREATLY ENJOY. I PICK UP A SENSE OF SPIRITUALISM AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR SUCH BEAUTIFUL SONG WRITING AND IS IT JUST MY "IMAGINARY DAY"? THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT MUSIC, YOU AND LYLE ARE MOST DEFINETLEY THE BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD! BARNETT GILL.

Pat’s Answer:

thanks barnett,

honestly, in my case it is rare that i find inspiration outside of the actual world of music (notes, sound, harmony, etc) and then use that as a source - most everything i write or play is based on the sound of what it is, or what it seems like it seems to want to be. this sometimes surprises people who i think would prefer that we were writing in reference to something - possibly spiritual or whatever else may be of interest. but i think it is ok,in fact even a good thing that people can listen to the music and find things in there that has a personal resonance to *their* lives, not ours. to me this is a primary function of any kind of art or good will.
