Question:

Hi Pat.My name is Karina. I'm From Argentina. I realy love your music. I have a Question about your improvisation in concert. Do you study every solo that you play in every song???? or maybe you study just an idea???

Pat’s Answer:

hi karina,

every solo in every song is different every time - i couldn't do it exactly the same way twice even if i wanted to. that is whole point of being a jazz musician - to improvise and tell a different story each time. that is not to say that you don't have favorite expressions, or favorite little twists and turns, or any one of a million other favorites - and if you are going to play a song hundreds or thousands of times you will of course develop a very strong point of view on that song - but the main thing is that you have to become fluent enough in the grammar of improvisation to forget it all and just be able to let your imagination go to wherever it takes you.

best from pat
