Subject: Dr. Pepper and Pencils

Question:

Back in the early 80's I was living in Boston, attending Berklee, and one night I was out late with some friends. Must have been about 1:00 in the morning, and we stopped into a 7/11-type convenience store for some junk food. You were standing ahead of us in line (I was too shy to disturb you), but I noticed that the 2 items you were buying in those wee hours was a 6-pack of Dr. Pepper, and a package of pencils (HB I think!). Kinda told its own story. I just wondered, with all the new technology, and sequencers, etc., do you still put pencil to paper when writing out your tunes? And is Dr. Pepper still a "pick me up" of choice? As an aside, I've loved your music since "Bright Size Life" appeared in my teenaged days, and think IMAGINARY DAY is just the most amazing @#%#@ thing I've ever heard! God bless.

Pat’s Answer:

thanks dick! i used to have a serious thing for dr. pepper! in missouri, that was the thing for us as kids growing up. i kicked the pepper habit long ago though! as far as pencils go - yes, i totally embrace the technology, but it is still usually faster for me to just write it down at a certain point!! the "technology" of a pencil and paper is pretty advanced if you think about it. and i am really glad you liked "id" so much...thanks!
