Subject: From jazz pianist Russ Freeman
Category: Musical Philosophy
From: Russ  Freeman (USA)
Question:

My name is Russ Freeman (the pianist, not the guitarist). I read your comments on Kenny G and couldn't agree more.

I have been retired as a pianist for a number of years but years ago, I was fortunate enough to have worked with Charlie Parker,Howard McGhee, Ben Webster, Wardell Gray, Chet Baker, Shelly Manne, Benny Goodman, etc. I'm sure they would all agree with your analysis.

Russ

P.S. The only thing that I can think of that would be comparably musically offensive as Kenny G is rap crap...

Pat’s Answer:

hi mr. freeman,

your approval of all this is much appreciated. thank you so much for taking the time to write in.

best from pat

p.s. - i have always really enjoyed your playing; was just listening to one of your quartet records with Chet Baker the other night!

p.s.s - i might add that i have heard a few things phrasing-wise in some of the best hiphop folks (lauryn hill comes to mind) that are actually pretty interesting rhythmically, if you can actually manage to forgo harmony and melody for awhile and just focus on rhythm - not something i care to do often, but can appreciate.
