Question:

Pat:

Bright Size Life is one of my favorite tunes to listen to and to play. (I'm somewhat less accomplished at it than you, however. It amazes me to think that you were still a kid when you wrote and recorded it. I was really excited to see it included on your Live Trio album - proof of the quality of the composition and your skillful performance that it can sound so good after 25 years.

I've always been curious about the title - it seems as if there is some mystical message behind it - something so elusive that you can never quite grasp it. However, I suspect that it's more likely the result of an experiment where you threw three darts at a newspaper. How did you come up with the title, and what does it mean to you?

Pat’s Answer:

hi bob,

i was just thinking about that the other day - and honestly, i have no idea what i was thinking about when naming that tune or where the title came from. i think it just popped into my head, and i recall jaco thinking that that was a good title, so that was that. for a long time that tune was known as exercise number 2, so anything would have been an improvement. glad you are still enjoying the music.

thanks for writing in.
