ROY HAYNES TURNS 90 AT THE NYC BLUE NOTE WITH PAT METHENY AS HIS SPECIAL GUEST

3.17.2015

On March 13 drummer Roy Haynes turned 90 years old and invited Pat and bassist Christian McBride to be his special guests for the evening. Roy has been at the forefront of modern jazz for 70 years and has been an essential figure in this music from “ Louis Armstrong to Metheny” as he often says. Over his career he has had important collaborative musical relationships with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Gary Burton, Chick Corea and just about everyone else who has left a major mark in this music. Pat has described Roy as “the father of modern drumming” and the presence of Jack DeJohnette and Antonio Sanchez and many other great drummers in the audience for this birthday event made that all the more evident. The band played pieces from the classic Metheny/Haynes recording from 1989 “Question and Answer” including the title tune and “H and H” as well as Metheny’s well known tune “James” which Haynes has played regularly with his bands over the years. Those audience members who were able to experience this amazing night will never forget it.
